Qualcomm gave Amazon $4B in warrants to secure a chip deal. GE paid $12B to own a castings plant it cannot get enough of. Intel raised prices into weak demand. Robinhood bought equity in two venues. Consumers expect the worst job market since 2020.

MARKET PULSE

Oil Touched $99. The Dow Led Everything Lower.

The Dow fell sharply. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq both dropped. VIX jumped. Amgen (AMGN) fell sharply after Novartis's cardiovascular drug trial failure hit rival treatments. Intel (INTC) surged on price hike news and an analyst upgrade. Copper hit a record high.

WTI climbed above $93. Goldman Sachs warned oil could hit $120 if Hormuz attacks intensify. Canada's retaliatory tariffs of 15 to 50 percent on $20 billion of U.S. goods took effect. The 10-year Treasury closed over 4.8 percent. Boston Scientific (BSX) lowered full-year targets after its cyberattack disrupted manufacturing.

Investor Signal

The physical constraint story is not slowing down. Qualcomm paid a customer to buy its chips. GE bought its supplier. Intel raised prices into weak demand. All three are responding to the same underlying pressure: what you need cannot be procured on a normal contract. Friday's CPI is the last print before September 16.

CHIP WATCH

Qualcomm Paid Amazon $4 Billion in Warrants Just to Get a Shot at the Data Center.

Qualcomm (QCOM) rose sharply after announcing an AWS partnership.

In an SEC filing, Qualcomm disclosed it issued Amazon (AMZN) warrants to acquire roughly 25 million shares at a fixed price. The warrants vest against Amazon purchasing up to $60 billion of Qualcomm server chips. Qualcomm targets $15 billion in data center sales by fiscal 2029.

The CPU angle is the real story. Bank of America projects the CPU market more than doubling by 2030. Nvidia's head of AI infrastructure said CPUs are becoming the bottleneck in agentic workflows. Qualcomm is trying to get into that market before the queue forms.

Direction of Payment Tells You Everything

  • Nvidia and Broadcom finance customers who need credit
  • Qualcomm pays a customer who does not need anything
  • Amazon vesting the warrants through purchase volume aligns its incentives nicely

Will Meta Get the Same Terms?

Meta committed to use Qualcomm's Dragonfly C1000 when production starts in 2028. Whether that relationship carries equity terms is unresolved. The answer will define what Qualcomm's data center relationships actually cost.

INDUSTRIALS WATCH

GE Aerospace Paid 26 Times Earnings to Own a Castings Plant It Could Not Buy Enough From.

GE Aerospace (GE) agreed to buy Consolidated Precision Products for $11.75 billion, its largest deal since separating. CPP makes precision-cast turbine blades for nearly every major commercial and military aircraft program. GE has been a CPP customer for 15 years. It now owns the supplier.

CEO Larry Culp said castings demand is rising sharply and engine makers cannot get enough. A castings shortfall has been capping production. The multiple paid is steep: 26 times expected 2027 core profit. Howmet Aerospace (HWM) fell sharply on the news.

26x Is the Price of Skipping the Queue

Howmet lost the option of being acquired and gained a well-funded competitor. The supply base for critical engine components just got more concentrated. Other engine makers relying on third-party castings now have a clearer view of their own exposure.

Navellier Warns: This Could Leapfrog Elon's SpaceX IPO

Elon Musk could take SpaceX public in 2026, at an estimated $1.75 trillion valuation. The IPO would include Elon's AI model, Grok. But according to Louis Navellier, a radical new AI model will launch this year… over 1,000 times more powerful than Elon's. And the company behind it could outperform SpaceX in the process.

Intel Is Raising PC Prices 10% Into Weak Demand. Its Stock Rose Sharply Anyway.

Intel raised PC CPU prices by roughly 10 percent in October, per supply chain reports, and may discontinue its lower-margin Small Core products entirely. Prices have been climbing since late last year as memory and circuit board costs rose. Intel closed trading 9% higher and is up 4x on the year.

The supply chain expects high-bandwidth memory to cost significantly more next year. That is the number that sets every device maker's 2027 cost base. Apple already raised MacBook and iPad prices. Huawei's executive director said memory cost pressure has been enormous. Xiaomi's CEO said memory is very, very expensive.

Raising Into Weakness Is a Power Move

  • HBM costs expected to rise 80% to 100% next year across the whole supply chain
  • Apple, Huawei, and Xiaomi have all flagged memory cost pressure publicly
  • Intel exiting Small Core protects margin at the cost of low-end market share

Memory scarcity made price increases possible. Intel is jumping at the opportunity to take advantage.

Who Pays at the End of the Chain

Device makers pass memory costs to consumers. The Fed reads consumer goods inflation in its CPI. That loop closes Friday. Intel's price hike is already inside it.

FINTECH WATCH

Robinhood Took Equity in Two Prediction-Market Venues in the Same Week It Got Its First Underwriting Seat.

Robinhood (HOOD) agreed to add Crypto.com's prediction-market contracts to its platform and took minority stakes in both Crypto.com and its spinout OG. Terms were not disclosed. Citadel Securities bought stakes in both at valuations of $15 billion for Crypto.com and $5 billion for OG in July.

Separately, Oura's filing listed Robinhood as an underwriter for the first time, ranked last behind Goldman Sachs (GS), Morgan Stanley (MS), JPMorgan (JPM), Allen & Co., and Jefferies. Robinhood had already invested in Oura through a closed-end fund launched earlier this year.

Positioning Before Anthropic

Retail demand for SpaceX shares totaled roughly $100 billion at IPO. Oversubscribed investors received a fraction of what they requested. Robinhood is building the infrastructure to capture that demand before Anthropic and OpenAI arrive.

SENTIMENT WATCH

Consumers Expect the Worst Job Market Since April 2020. Inflation Expectations Did Not Move.

The New York Fed's consumer survey showed inflation expectations flat in August at 3.6 percent one year out and 3 percent five years out. Gasoline price expectations rose. The labor market picture moved the other way.

Unemployment expectations a year from now hit their highest level since April 2020. The shift was broad-based across age, income, and education. Respondents marked down their current and future financial situations. Credit access expectations deteriorated.

The combination is specific. Low expected job-loss risk but also low expected re-employment odds if fired. That is the low-hire, low-fire market that payrolls confirmed. Inflation anchored at 3.6 percent is not a crisis. It is also not 2 percent.

Reading the Labor Pessimism

  • Unemployment expectations hit April 2020 levels despite 162,000 jobs added last week
  • Re-employment odds fell even as job-loss expectations declined
  • Credit access expectations deteriorated broadly across all demographics

Consumers are reading the labor market as tighter than the headline number suggests. Their inflation expectations stayed anchored. That combination gives Waller more cover than Hammack.

The Survey Hands Waller His Cover

Waller said he would support holding if disinflation continues. The survey shows households do not expect inflation to accelerate. Cleveland's Beth Hammack voted to hike and called it time to act. The survey gives neither camp a clean win. CPI on Friday decides.

CLOSING LENS

Physical constraints are repricing the economy from the bottom up.

Qualcomm paid a customer to buy its chips. GE paid 26 times earnings to own its supply chain. Intel raised prices into soft demand and investors approved. Robinhood positioned itself for the largest retail IPO wave in history. And consumers told the Fed they expect the worst job market in years while inflation expectations barely budged.

None of these stories are separate. They are all versions of the same shortage economy. CPI lands Friday. The vote is September 16.
