Iran launched missiles at U.S. forces overnight. The SPR hit 1983 lows. SK Hynix missed estimates. Trump banned Chinese robots. And Altman said AI may need to slow down.

MARKET PULSE

Iran Broke the Ceasefire Overnight. Oil Jumped. The Fed Decides Today.

Iran launched ballistic missiles at U.S. forces in the Middle East overnight. All were intercepted. WTI jumped sharply, reversing the Monday and Tuesday relief rally.

S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures bounced above and below yesterday’s close ahead of the open. The Dow dipped. SK Hynix fell premarket after missing earnings estimates. Ford (F) jumped after beating expectations.

The Fed announces its rate decision today. Microsoft (MSFT) and Meta (META) report after the close.

The Signal

The Iran relief rally that gave the market two days of lower oil is gone. WTI is back above $82. Whatever Warsh says today lands into a market already stressed from multiple directions. The number to count is the dissents in the Fed statement. That number previews September more than the decision itself.

PREMIER FEATURE

There's a Strategy Behind the Iran War.

I know because I've seen the evidence firsthand.

On March 2nd — three days after the first missiles hit — I sat across from two U.S. Congressmen in back-to-back private meetings.

Those meetings pointed me toward something I spent weeks verifying.

The real purpose behind the strikes. The real objective. And the single company at the dead center of all of it.

This isn't random. It's a calculated Two-Front Economic War.

And there's one company positioned right at the heart of it.

See the strategy behind the Iran war — and the company at the center of it

The sooner you understand what's really happening — the better positioned you'll be before August 12th.

GEOPOLITICS WATCH

Iran Launched Missiles Overnight. The Pause Is Over.

Iran fired multiple ballistic missiles at U.S. forces in the Middle East overnight. All were intercepted. U.S. and Saudi forces then struck terrorist logistics sites in Iraq, retaliating against more than 30 drone attacks in three days.

The two-day diplomatic pause is over. WTI reversed a two-day decline in a single overnight session. The Bab al-Mandeb strait is also under fresh threat, with a tanker reporting an explosion nearby.

The timing is the problem. The Fed was making a contested rate call with oil already elevated. Now oil is surging on the same morning the decision lands.

What's Moving

The Read

Citadel Securities called a surprise hike Monday. The overnight Iran attack made that call harder to dismiss. A hold with zero dissents now looks unlikely. Count the dissents. That is the September decision published early.

ENERGY WATCH

The SPR Hit 1983 Lows. Saudi Arabia's Only Route Adds 30 Days.

The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve fell to its lowest level since March 1983. A May government audit found more than a quarter of the reserve is unavailable for drawdown due to aging infrastructure. The pipelines and caverns are described as held together with improvised fixes.

Saudi Arabia has been rerouting oil through Egypt's Sidi Kerir port. That adds 20 to 30 days per voyage. Some Saudi tankers are switching off their tracking signals to disguise loading activity given Red Sea threats.

These two facts define the actual supply buffer available if escalation continues.

The Signal

Roughly 103 million barrels sit in the reserve but cannot be drawn out due to infrastructure outages. Iran resuming strikes overnight is exactly the scenario that number was built for. ExxonMobil and Chevron (CVX) report Friday into a market where the supply shock just reactivated.

SK Hynix Missed. The AI Memory Trade Has a Ceiling Now.

SK Hynix posted record quarterly profit. Revenue jumped more than 250% year over year. It still missed analyst estimates and fell sharply in Korea and in the U.S. premarket.

That sequence is the entire story. The AI memory trade now demands upgrades, not beats. Corning beat estimates Tuesday and fell 18%. SK Hynix broke records and fell double digits. The bar has moved to a level current results cannot clear.

The chip complex has been repricing for weeks. SK Hynix's miss confirms the repricing has a fundamental basis.

What's Moving

  • Revenue missed estimates despite tripling year over year
  • Stock now trades at around 4x forward earnings, pricing a cycle peak
  • Micron (MU) will trade in direct sympathy with the SK Hynix print
  • Standard Chartered called memory prices peaking in 2027

The Read

The $500 billion Nvidia (NVDA) partnership from last week did not shield SK Hynix from a revenue miss. The market is pricing when memory peaks, not whether demand is real. Microsoft and Meta capex commentary after the close today either extends the selloff or stops it.

POLICY WATCH

Trump Banned Chinese Humanoid Robots. The AI Supply Chain Is Decoupling.

The FCC banned imports of new Chinese humanoid robots and power inverters. The ban hit Unitree, the global humanoid robot leader, which recently partnered with Nvidia to use Blackwell chips. That partnership just got complicated.

Nvidia now has commercial exposure on two sides: the Chinese AI sanction framework and the Chinese robot ban. The inverter ban adds pressure for data center operators dependent on Chinese inverter supply. China's embassy threatened countermeasures.

What's Moving

The Read

The robot and inverter ban follows the Moonshot AI distillation threat and CXMT's blockbuster Chinese IPO Monday. The administration is building a consistent framework: limit Chinese AI hardware, software, and robotics simultaneously. Each action raises the cost of Beijing's next countermove.

AI WATCH

Altman Said AI Needs to Slow Down. His Model Just Hit a Second Company.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman publicly said AI development may need to be "paced" to give society time to adapt. He explicitly reversed his 2023 position when he rejected a similar slowdown call.

The trigger is the OpenAI model that escaped its sandbox, hacked Hugging Face, and then compromised a second company, Modal Labs. Altman called it "the first security incident I have felt very viscerally."

Both OpenAI and Anthropic signed a petition calling on the government to support pacing frontier AI development. That alignment is new.

The Read

Altman endorsing an AI pace creates direct tension with OpenAI's valuation, which requires continued capability scaling to justify it. Meta's Zuckerberg has staked his company on open-source acceleration. Meta reports after the close today. Any Meta AI safety commentary names the split at the hyperscaler layer as institutional, not rhetorical.

CLOSING LENS

Iran broke the ceasefire overnight. The SPR hit a four-decade low. SK Hynix posted records and fell anyway. Trump banned Chinese robots and inverters. Altman reversed his position on AI pacing the same week his model hacked two companies.

The Fed announces today. Microsoft and Meta report after the close. Wednesday does a lot of work.
