Alphabet's blowout was mostly paper. Nvidia bought two more AI founders. China threatened countermeasures. Business investment beat. SpaceX nailed the test and the stock fell anyway.
The Relief Rally Tried. Chips Killed It.
The session opened with genuine optimism. WTI fell sharply on the Iran pause. By the close, the Nasdaq was down and chip stocks had sold off hard. The Dow finished 0.5% higher.
Oil settled near $82, the sharpest single-day drop in months. That is real relief. But the market decided to worry about something else: whether AI spending produces actual returns, or just impressive-sounding numbers.
Nvidia (NVDA) fell roughly 5% on the same day it announced a potential $250 billion data center backstop. That one sentence tells you everything about today's mood.
The Signal
Oil dropped sharply. Yields slipped. The VIX still climbed. The session priced Iran relief and AI skepticism simultaneously, and skepticism won. Alphabet (GOOGL), Amazon (AMZN), Microsoft (MSFT), Meta (META), and Apple (AAPL) all report this week. Each one is now being read through the same lens: how much of the earnings beat is real, and how much is a stake in a private company that could reprice tomorrow.

Alphabet Drove 92% of S&P 500 Earnings Growth. Most of It Was Paper.
Alphabet posted $112 billion in net income for Q2. That single result accounted for 92% of the entire S&P 500's net dollar earnings increase. Strip it out and index earnings growth falls from roughly 38% to 26%.
About $99 billion of that came from unrealized investment gains. The stakes were in SpaceX (SPCX) and a private company Alphabet declined to name. Unrealized means it has not been collected. SpaceX shares are already down sharply since Q2 ended. Alphabet also posted its first ever quarter with negative free cash flow.
The S&P 500's net profit margins are sitting at a record high. That record is built on the same paper foundation.
What's Moving
- Amazon holds an Anthropic stake. Its report gets the same scrutiny
- Combined Big Four capex could top $700 billion this year
- Albertsons (ACI) warned of deepening struggles among low-income shoppers
- Starbucks (SBUX), Visa (V), Boeing (BA), and UPS (UPS) also report this week
The Read
If two or more hyperscalers show mark-to-market gains driving reported net income, the record margin figure is a valuation event, not an operating one. That is a very different thing to buy heading into a Fed rate decision that nobody can predict.
Nvidia Backed Two OpenAI Founders in Five Months. The Pattern Is Now a Strategy.
Nvidia backed Ilya Sutskever's AI lab Safe Superintelligence, giving it GPU access that increases its compute by an order of magnitude. SSI was previously running on Google TPUs. It is not anymore.
In March, Nvidia made a similar move with former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati's lab Thinking Machines, which released its first Nvidia-trained model earlier this month. Two of the three most prominent OpenAI founder spinouts are now locked into Nvidia infrastructure.
Nvidia also joined the Open Secure AI Alliance alongside Microsoft, SpaceX, and Palantir (PLTR), responding to the OpenAI-Hugging Face hack.
What's Moving
- SSI carried a roughly $30 billion valuation before the Nvidia deal
- Thinking Machines shipped its first model on Nvidia hardware earlier this month
- Anthropic is reportedly exploring custom chip design, keeping one alternative path open
- Google's TPU program lost its two most prominent outside lab users in five months
The Setup
Nvidia is not just selling chips. It is buying GPU dependency into the labs most likely to define the next generation of AI. The circular risk Michael Burry's short thesis flagged, Nvidia financing its own customers to buy its own chips, now has a second data point. Wednesday's Fed decision is the first thing big enough to move the stock either direction regardless of the strategy's merit.
Elon Musk Calling on Military 'Dark Energy' to Power AI
When it was put inside U.S. tanks, they moved almost silently and produced no smoke. Now, Elon Musk is using this strange technology to jump ahead in the AI race - and possibly change the course of history. Click here to see how this could ignite a $10 trillion boom for the stocks involved.
Beijing Said "AI Hegemonism." The Entity List Is Now on the Table.
China's commerce ministry fired back after Treasury Secretary Bessent warned that Chinese AI companies could face sanctions over alleged distillation of Anthropic's Claude model. Beijing called the accusations baseless and threatened countermeasures.
The company at the center is Moonshot AI, whose Kimi K3 model the White House accused of being built by extracting U.S. model capabilities at industrial scale, using servers in Thailand to avoid detection. Moonshot denied it. The Entity List threat is real either way.
The Huawei comparison is not subtle. That designation in 2019 cut Huawei off from Google, ARM, and U.S. cloud services overnight. The same framework applied to a Chinese AI lab hits the same pressure points.
The Fault Line
China's most immediate countermeasure lever is rare earths. The IEA warned this month that $6.5 trillion of global manufacturing is exposed if Beijing moves on export restrictions. That risk sits directly underneath Wednesday's Fed meeting. Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, and IBM (IBM) also published a letter opposing premature AI restrictions, putting the largest U.S. tech companies visibly on a different side from the administration on this one.
Business Investment Beat. GDP Lands Thursday. The Fed Has No Easy Answer.
Core capital goods orders rose 0.9% in June, beating estimates. Shipments surged nearly 2%. AI infrastructure spending is driving both numbers. Jobless claims are the lowest since 1969. Companies from CSX (CSX) to Alphabet are talking about hiring again after 18 months of cuts.
The economy is not soft. That makes the Fed's job genuinely harder.
Q2 GDP lands Thursday with a consensus around 2.1% annualized growth. A print well above that hardens the hawks' case. A miss below it names oil damage as deeper than the hiring data suggested.
The Pressure Point
Warsh walks into Wednesday with strong business investment, a historically tight labor market, oil sharply lower on the Iran pause, and Section 301 tariffs adding pressure to core inflation. None of those signals point the same direction. He has given no hint which way he breaks. Count the dissents in Wednesday's statement. That number is the September rate decision published early.
Why are companies flying spy planes over Elon's closely-guarded AI lab?
Elon did the seemingly impossible – far faster than anyone expected...
And it's sent the tech industry into PANIC MODE.
ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini, and DeepSeek could soon become obsolete.
And three little-known firms could soar 10X or higher as a result.
Starship Test 13 Was Near Perfect. The Stock Fell Anyway.
SpaceX completed a near-perfect Starship test over the weekend. The upper stage deployed satellites, relit its engine in space, and splashed down cleanly. The booster missed its soft landing. Analysts called it a meaningful success overall.
The stock barely moved up at the open and then slipped. SpaceX (SPCX) has now dropped 50% from its peak. It trades at around 40 times estimated 2026 sales, a richer multiple than any other trillion-dollar company. The market is no longer pricing execution risk. It is pricing whether the valuation makes sense at all.
August 4 is the first earnings report. That date also triggers the first phase of insider lock-up releases.
The Read
SpaceX's private valuation flowed directly through Alphabet's Q2 net income as part of that $99 billion paper gain. If SpaceX's valuation compresses further in Q3, Alphabet's next reported earnings take a hit through the same channel. Two companies. One price. One of them is public and one is not. August 4 is when the market gets actual numbers instead of estimates.
Alphabet posted a record quarter on paper gains that are already shrinking. Nvidia is financing its own customers to guarantee chip demand. China is threatening countermeasures before anyone has been formally sanctioned. Business investment beat. SpaceX nailed the test and the stock fell anyway.
The session gave no clean answers. Wednesday has to.
